Everyday in May: Honesty is the key

First of all, I'm behind on comments again, but will catch up over the weekend. I'm buried with articles until then. I really appreciate all of your kind words, and will check out your blogs in return very soon.

Today's prompt for "Blog Every Day in May" is: "A piece of advice you have for others. Anything at all." My best piece of advice for life in general is to always be honest to a fault. This is something I was trained with growing up, and it has always served me well.

Honesty is not just about telling the truth, but about living in honor. In fact, honor is the only thing you get to keep when you die. That's what my mother always told me. It's not enough to just tell the truth, but also to remove deception. Telling something that is technically the truth in words but still conceals the truth is not honest.

Even when you believe that a lie will be better for someone to save their feelings or make them happy, it will likely backfire in the end. Things may initially be OK, but the truth always comes out, and it is always worse after a lie. Conversely, the truth may feel bad in the beginning, but will allow the person hearing it to relieve themselves of any negative emotions right away and begin the healing process. And if it's small-ball stuff, that's not so difficult anyway.

When you lie, the person you lie to will usually have an inkling you have lied anyway, and then the negative emotions are allowed to pile up until they become venomous to everyone involved, including the person you lied to or were dishonest with. Even if it's a small thing, those annoyances will build up, and could even turn to hatred. So, just be honest every chance you get, and things will work out in the end.

  1. I'm not sure I can embrace the "brutal honesty" philosophy. Too many people use that as their excuse for just being mean and dirty to people, and their response is always something like, "What? I was just being honest."

    1. I never used those words. I don't think you should ever be mean for the sake of being mean. But if someone asks you a question, then I do think you should tell them the truth. If it's something like, "How do I look?" you don't have to say "You look stupid," or something like that. You can just tell them that you don't care for the outfit or something. You get the idea.

If I don't want to hear what someone thinks, I won't ask them the question. If I do want to know, then I ask. If they lie to me, I have a hard time ever being friends with them because I know they will simply lie to me whenever I ask them anything. I appreciate friends who tell me the truth. I can't be friends with someone who lies to me all the time.

  2. Yeah, I know you didn't use those words; it's just what it made me think of. I do think there is sometimes a division between "honesty" and "the truth." Which is not to say that I'm for lying, because I'm not. If you follow my book reviews for long enough, you'll certainly see that that's the truth.

    1. Sorry I had sort of a knee-jerk reaction. I've been emotional this morning after believing my cat was lost. Turn out she was stuck in my across the street neighbor's garage. Whew! I'm just starting to feel normal again. :) Thank you for stopping by!

    2. No problem. I haven't seen my cat all morning, either. Not since I let him out at 5am. Usually, he's around somewhere, but it's not like this hasn't happened before. I'm sure he'll turn up by dinner, because they always do, right?

    3. Mine was gone since last night, even though she has been coming inside and sleeping with me at night for the past few weeks. So I was kind of a wreck all morning. She's an outdoor cat for the most part, so I probably shouldn't have stressed so much, but it's just not like her to do that. So now I know it really wasn't like her, because she was trapped. Poor baby.

    4. I try to be honest too Kristen. Often as I respond to people though, I don't know what's true or even my own feelings about what they write. I have decided to be open and express my thoughts and feelings and often say something like: Here's how I approached it or worked through a health issue or a conflict with a physician or insurer. I have often had to seek advice from multiple sources and then choose what might work based on my knowledge of working with issues. I've also gained kind of a sense for knowing when someone really wants some advice. This has worked to entirely change behavior and attitudes many times. The main think I ask is will this help them and I have to put helping me or benefitting me aside. I really have found, like you, that honestly working with an attitude of being helpful and moving a person toward a re-examination of something builds strong people and relationships. I try these days to be more thoughtful and considerate of them. To be a good listener is usually, but not at always the best way. We almost lost our cat Amber too about two weeks ago. We went to pieces for an evening thinking we had sometimes let her get out into a bad snow storm. Four hours later we found her in a new hiding spot in a closet and we had already looked there. Black cats like our Miss Amber are very hard to see at night. We rejoiced because she is very loved and is an indoor cat. She would be unable to care for herself or find her way back if she got lost. We got very emotional just like you did. It took us about two days to calm down. Keep up your writing. I enjoy it very much.

  3. anytime I have ever lied I have riddled myself with such guilt and rumination that I eventually wind up confessing...I am such a bad lier...thank GOD!

  4. Lying takes a lot of effort to produce and then remember, lol! I don't like lies. Not my mode of operandi, either.

If you ask me what I think of---whatever the subject is, I'll be honest. But I also will be tactful, meaning I choose my words and tone with care. Words can be sharper than a knife and the scars last far, far longer in the memory. Which is why I'm not into brutal honesty and that ISN'T what you were aiming at with this article. But are those that think being honest means it's okay to be unvarnished and even brutal in word choices and tone.

Honor demands speaking truth rather than lies but it also demands having a care for people's feelings and employing the golden rule of treating others as we would like to be treated.

My mom, like yours, always said a lie by omission is still a lie and deceptive. Oh, we would get into SUCH trouble when we tried it, lol! Yikes.

Glad your baby got home safely. I'm the same way with my pride of cats and especially out here in the middle of the rurals and forests.

  5. Awesome advice. Truth is very important to me too, and I think it's such an important theme for writers, for don't we search for truth within our fiction?

Great post - happily blitzing you today!

  7. I agree with the spirit of what you're saying. And yes, you can usually make out from the body language whether a person is telling the truth or no.
However, I wouldn't go so far to distrust a person who tries to spare my feelings and is not totally "honest" with me- at least over unimportant things like "Do I look nice in this/does this color suit me" stuff. I too am not totally honest when someone asks me these kinds of questions- if they're happy wearing something or doing something, so be it!
However, in more important things, like matters related to money/investments, relationships, career changes, yes, brutal honesty is required.
I think you have to be true to yourself, and discover the truth for yourself.
Hope all this is not too confusing- random musings from a truth seeker! :-)

  8. I agree and was going to say something similar to what Andrew and other commenters already mentioned. Truth, honesty--yes, but people shouldn't use it as an excuse to be hurtful.
Good to meet you and have an awesome day! :D

  9. Good to meet you, Kirsten. I think lies never work - except for the 'does my bum look big in this?' sort... certainly in the publishing world, lies are very destructive and can damage a writer's confidence. I have had destructive reviews posted by other writers purely to enhance their own books. It;a pain, but, as you say, it eventually backfires upon them...

  22. I couldn't agree with you more. It's nearly impossible for me to lie. I was just telling someone about serving on a jury. It was going to be a hassle and I had a few excuses I could've used, but I didn't want to say something that wasn't true. So I didn't and got chosen. In the end, it was a rewarding experience.

Honesty has been on my mine a great deal lately. I'm sick of people withholding information because of a perception that they are dodging the bullet by not being forthcoming. I used to let people lie to me all the time, now, very little if I know.

  84. Thank you for that post. Being adult and mature requires thruth and authenticity. Telling the truth to someone grants being to the other person. It gives them the opportunity to deal with what there is to deal with for themselves and the relationship. Lying, keeps everyone small. It is selfish to think thata someone cannot take it or that we don't want to hurt them. We just don't want to look bas and avoid the consequences of what is so.

  99. Such a good thing to live by. I'm such an honest person, and I have such a strong conscience. When I was a student I found a wallet in a toilet cubicle with £90 cash in it. Honesty tempered with kindness and tact is always the best policy. I've discovered that what I may consider rude or mean, others consider honesty and seek. And those who point out that lies find their way back to haunt you are correct. Truth is always the best policy.

  106. If you always tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you lied about. Quote from ... I can't remember. See, I can barely remember anything, so I might as well keep it simpler and just tell the truth. Otherwise, I'd have to remember the truth, the lies, and what was what.

And even if you have to say something truthful that could be harsh, you should do your best to deliver the truth with love and respect. Ask: how would I like to be told what I'm about to tell someone?

A good and thought-provoking article, Kristen. And happy Blog Blitz Day! :D

  114. I really agree about lying. I lied recently.. sigh. My friend invited me out to a bar that was country. I said I wanted to go... but I don't like country so later I told her I was sick so I wasn't going to go. Then my husband, myself and two friends went out to dinner. And I told my husband hopefully I don't see my friend here..hahahah. Well of course my friend and her husband did go out to eat at the same place. I don't know why I didn't just tell her I didn't want to go.. I don't even know why I lied! Happy Blitz Day. Great advice!

  117. This is so true. Lies will always catch up with us. There's no point playing with them. Happy Blitz day!

  119. Happy Blitzing! :) I hope you're loving it!

I am such a stickler about truths vs. white lies or lies period. I always, ALWAYS say "get rid of the grey and make it black and white!" Makes things soooooo much easier in life!

Very happy to read your blog. So inspiring!

    Take care...

  120. Hi - I'm Blitzing you! Hope you've been having a great time meeting all the bloggers.

I tend to veer toward bluntness myself, but I work hard to serve it up with diplomacy. Basically, whatever my word choices may be, anyone looking at me can tell what I really think, anyway. So honesty is my policy by default.

  121. Hi - Blitzing you! Hope you had a great day!!! I absolutely agree with you that honesty is the best policy. And your mom sounds like a wise woman - I agree that a person's honor is one of the only thing you can take to the grave.

    Happy blitz day!

  122. I love that! Honor is the only thing you keep when you die. I had a roommate who taught me what honor really means, and no surprise, she was a reader. She learned from books about heroes and honor, and I'm thankful every day for her example to me. Honor is actually a rare commodity these days. Blitzed before midnight on the Pacific coast!

  124. Looks like I am a bit late for the blitz. I am in New Zealand and our dates are nearly a day ahead, then I don't want to be early and I end up late. That's my honesty for today. Happy Blog blitz.

  126. It's really hard for me to get these things right, because I live in the southern hemisphere and I'm always well ahead of when we're meant to start blitzing ;) So I have missed most of them so far! Anyway, I'm here BELATEDLY to join in the blitz. Congrats on being chosen for this fun :D
