When you look at the More gadgets list, the "Followers" gadget is near the bottom on the front page. If you search for it, it won't show in the results. This is probably why I couldn't find it before, because it must have gone to another page. I had looked through about four pages and couldn't find it. If that happens to you, just keep looking. It's in there somewhere.

How to Put the Google Friend Connect Gadget on a New Blog (UPDATED)
When I originally wrote this tutorial, I couldn't find the Google Friend Connect gadget anywhere in the Add Gadget list, even when I looked on the More gadgets list. Well, it must have been missing temporarily, because it's in the list now all of a sudden.
